Ceremony Details
The EcoTeach Center and the Faculty of the Department of Economics are pleased to invite all graduating undergraduate economics first majors and their guests to join in a Graduation Ceremony & Reception on Sunday, May 11, 2008 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Please note that for 2008 we are excited to include economics M.A. and Ph.D. recipients in the event.
The Reception will run first, on the floor of Cameron, beginning as soon as the University's Wallace Wade Ceremony ends, typically around 11:30am. Buffet lines will be set-up on the floor of Cameron so that guests may pick-up their refreshments as they make their way to ceremony seats. Sandwich box lunches will be provided by Duke's Alpine Catering (a vegetarian option will be included).
The Economics Ceremony will begin as soon as all guests are seated and no later than 12:30pm. We anticipate that the Ceremony will last about one hour, and will definitely conclude no later than 2:00pm. Invitations will be mailed to the families of our graduates by mid-January 2008 . Questions can be addressed to the Assistant to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, asst_dus@econ.duke.edu or #919/660-1881.

Diploma and Name Card Pick-up
Prior to our Ceremony start at 12:00pm, all graduates must visit the Hall of Honor on the second floor of Cameron. Diplomas will be distributed from 4 tables (alphabet split) clearly marked with balloons and signage. Name Cards for the Recognition Ceremony will be distributed with diplomas. Fall 2007 and September 2008 graduates should still go to the diploma tables to pick-up their Name Card. Students should keep their name cards in their possession and bring them to the stage during the Recognition Ceremony. The card will be used to read names and degree as graduates cross the stage.
Graduate Seating & Ceremony Participation
The middle two sections of floor seating will be reserved for graduates. Students may sit within the reserved seats wherever they would like and do not need to sit in a specific seat or in alphabetical order. Please remain seated for the duration of the Ceremony (except for the trip to the stage to receive diplomas). Students should not sit with their guests. A Ceremony Program will be left on each graduate's seat. Students do not need to pick one up as they enter Cameron.
Graduates will be well cued by an usher when it is time to rise and ascend to the stage to receive their diplomas. We will process the first aisle (both sides) first, then the second, etc. Graduates will ascend the stage by the stairs at stage left. GRADUATES MUST TAKE THEIR NAME CARD WITH THEM TO THE STAGE. Each graduate will be cued when it is their turn to walk across the stage as their name is called. A professional photographer will take a picture as each graduate receives their diploma and a professional videographer will film the entire event. Graduates will then descend from the stage. There is a second professional photo op at the foot of the stairs. Please pause here for a photo and then return to graduate seating.
Guest Seating
Ample open seating is provided for guests on the second floor of Cameron. As these seats offer the best sight lines to the stage, we recommend sitting upstairs when possible. Reservations for seats on the Floor of Cameron to accomodate guests who may have difficulty ascending to the second floor (Cameron does not have an elevator), can be made through the DUS Assistant (asst_dus@econ.duke.edu, #919-660-1881). Reserved seats will be marked with flyers indicating "Reserved for the Graduate's Name Family," and we will try to seat your entire party together when possible. Ushers marked with corsages and nametags will be on hand to assist with any seating issues.
Photographing
There will be a professional photographer at the event, PhotoSpecialities, Inc.. As each graduate is handed his/her diploma, their picture will be taken. Graduates will receive an email from the photographer with a link to their website, and a password that allows for vieiwing and ordering of graduation photos online. A free color proof will also be mailed to the Graduate's permanent address. You are under no obligation to purchase prints. If you do not receive a proof within a week of the ceremony, please contact info@photospecialties.com or call #1-800-722-7033.
Economics Department T-shirts
Graduate students from the Department of Economics will staff a table in the first floor lobby of Cameron from which they'll be selling Economics T-shirts. Proceeds from the sale support Econ graduate student activities throughout the year. Prices range from $12 - $20. There are a number of different styles from which to choose and can be purchased with cash or check. Again, you are under no obligation to buy. |
