Courses & Registration

Schedules & Descriptions

Pre-requisite Enforcement & Overrides

Pre-requisites on all economics courses are enforced through ACES.  Students seeking entrance to a course without the necessary pre-requisites must complete an Override Pre-requisites Form.

After obtaining the approval signature of the course instructor, students should deliver the form to EcoTeach, Room 138 SocSci, for approval by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.   Completed forms may then be walked to the Student Services Center (101 Allen Building) for processing.

N.B.: Students who experience problems in registering for economics core courses (Econ 1D, 51D, 105D, 110D and 139D) should contact EcoTeach rather than the course instructor.

Registration & Waitlists

Students registering for Economics courses follow the guidelines and registration windows established each term by the University Registrar's Office.   EcoTeach cannot guarantee enrollment, but students who are put on a waitlist should remain on the waitlist to indicate to EcoTeach their desire for course entrance.

EcoTeach will save all waitlists prior to their erasure at 5:00pm on the last day of the first week of drop/add, at which time all courses revert to permission only.   When additional seats are possible, given room capacity, pedagogical, and funding constraints, permission numbers will be emailed to students on the waitlist within 1-2 business days after the close of waitlists.

The Director of Undergraduate Studies will mediate all enrollment decisions. Priority will be given to graduating majors.

Questions and concerns can be addressed to the Assistant to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, dus_asst@econ.duke.edu, #919/660-1881, Room 138 Social Sciences.

AP/IB Credit & Course Placement
The Department of Economics will grant the following AP credit, based on a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement test:

  • AP Principles of Macroeconomics = Econ 1A
  • AP Principles of Microeconomics = Econ 2A

Students who have credit for both Econ 1A and Econ 2A are exempted from Econ 51D, Principles of Economics. Students who successfully complete A-levels in Economics will also be exempted from Econ 51D.
