The Department of Economics and the Œconophile lost a dear friend and colleague when Priscilla Lane died on 24 February 2003. Priscilla played a big role in the department’s efforts to resume the Œconophile. The department extends our deepest sympathy to Priscilla’s family. Following are the eloquent remarks made by Craufurd Goodwin, Acting Interim Chair of the department, at the memorial service for Priscilla.
The economics department is devastated by the loss of Priscilla Lane. She was more than a staff member; she was a member of the family. She was rather like our mother superior. Priscilla was everyone’s friend and confidante, the person to whom you went when you wanted advice or just to complain. She was exceptionally good at her job and as a result was overworked. We are just discovering how much as we find volunteers to pick up some of her responsibilities. She was editing the newsletter, running Roy Weintraub’s conference, providing computer support to EcoTeach, managing the workshops, and picking up obstacles from Curtis Taylor’s path. I used to enjoy just going by and hanging out with Priscilla during gaps in the action and enjoying her charm, her wit, her deep intelligence, and her rollicking sense of humor. I enjoyed sharing mutual interests in art, in gardens, and in nature more generally. We talked about her beloved Chatham County home and her plans for it in her retirement. It is hard to believe that Priscilla is not still tucked around that corner and ready for a yarn. We will all miss her very much.
